Drink Eight Glasses of Water Per Day

Similar to food, lack of water can also slow the metabolic rate. How can that be, you ask. Water is partially involved with the functioning of your liver. Part of the liver’s duty is to break down and metabolize fat. However, if the liver receives a message that the kidneys are water deprived, it picks up the slack of the kidneys and turns its concentration to water retention instead of burning fat. In other words, in addition to taxing the liver, being in a state of dehydration will also promote fat storage. [more...]

What Is Metabolism?

The majority of people feel their metabolic rate is fixed and cannot be changed. While some aspects that determine your metabolic rate are fixed (your age and gender, for example), as you will soon discover, there are many things you can control that influence your metabolism.

The key is to maximize the aspect of your metabolism that is flexible; this ensures you triumph over the weight-loss battle once and for all. Aspects that can influence the rate at which your metabolism functions include: [more...]

Quick Tip: Do Not Weigh Yourself Daily

I cannot stress this enough. This will only lead to frustration and a burst in your weight-loss bubble. Staying motivated and seeing results is just as important as eating the right foods. Weight-loss changes do not take place overnight. Weigh yourself on the same scale once per week in the morning. Record your weight from week to week to monitor your progress.

Quick Tip: Too Much of a Good Thing?

Increasing your metabolism can be tricky business. You must strike a fine balance between caloric intake, proper food choices and exercise. If you go too extreme on any of of these, your metabolism can respond as though you are in a pre-historic time of starvation: it will go into a “safety mode” of storing fat and calories. In other words, your metabolism will do exactly the opposite of what you want it to do. Balance is key.

Body Fat Percentage and Lean Body Mass

In addition to examining BMI and waist circumference, many healthcare professionals also record body fat percentage versus lean body mass. This is an important percentage to acquire, as two individuals can have the exact same height and weight, but may vary significantly in terms of their total body make-up.

Our bodies are made up of a number of tissues such as muscles, organs and fat. The body fat percentage of an individual is just that-the percent- age of their weight which is made up of fat. The part of the body that is not fat is referred to as the “lean body mass.” For example, an individual who weighs 160 pounds with a lean body mass of 110, has a 25 percent body fat (40 pounds of fat). Keep in mind that a certain amount of fat is necessary for health; it provides part of our natural insulation, stores energy and is used for hormone production. The problem arises when fat tips the scales in percentages and creates fatty build-up around our organs and arteries. [more...]

Old Habits

Old habits die hard. This saying is especially true for food and dietary changes. On a very deep and intimate level, we are all connected to our food choices. Food signifies different things to different people. For some, it can help to soothe and comfort us when we have feelings of loneliness, despair or anger. For others, it may be used in excess for celebrations, in times of joy and as a reward for a hard day’s work. Whatever the reasons, I am a firm believer that on some level, we are all emotional eaters. [more...]

Weight Loss: What about Genetics?

While it is true that everyone is put on this earth with a unique genetic makeup that can influence future health and disease, it is also true that environmental components such as diet, lifestyle, stress levels and smoking can also have enormous impact.

In terms of weight loss, the word “excuses” implies that people are looking for an out so they do not have to start. I think excuses is too harsh a term in this case. However, I do believe most people who are frustrated with the weight-loss world (and are perhaps carrying some emotional bag- gage) have their own internal list of reasons why they “cannot lose weight.” Here are some examples.
