Old Habits

Old habits die hard. This saying is especially true for food and dietary changes. On a very deep and intimate level, we are all connected to our food choices. Food signifies different things to different people. For some, it can help to soothe and comfort us when we have feelings of loneliness, despair or anger. For others, it may be used in excess for celebrations, in times of joy and as a reward for a hard day’s work. Whatever the reasons, I am a firm believer that on some level, we are all emotional eaters.

To change any habit or make any significant lifestyle change you have to be in the correct mindset. A smoker cannot quit smoking unless he has made up his mind to do so. In order for effective change to occur, the motivation and desire for a different pattern of life has to be the underlying impetus. Weight loss and dietary changes are no exception. In fact, people often find dietary changes the hardest change to make and stick to. The desire to lose weight is very personal and complex; you may have a variety of reasons for wanting to lose weight. You may want to fit into your little black dress at an upcoming reunion or, on a more serious note, you may have decided to get control of your health due to an illness or disease. The key is to know that once you acquire the correct information and set up an action plan, the results are easily attainable. Let’s try to achieve permanent and long-lasting weight loss.
